Each office at the Office of Facility Management and Reliability (OFMR) plays an extremely important role in day-to-day Smithsonian operations. Together our team works to maintain, repair, and service the historic buildings and grounds of the Smithsonian Institution. This office includes Systems Engineering, Support Services, Business Operations, Safety, Operations & Maintenance and Organizational Development. Systems Engineering
Systems Engineering

This division provides a wide range of services including Building Automation, Electrical and Life Safety Services, Energy Management, Contract and Assessment Services, and Systems Monitoring/Reliability. It is also responsible for developing Reliability Centered Maintenance tasks.

Support Services

This division provides a wide range of pan-Institutional services including Mail, Fleet Management, Transportation Services, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Audio-Visual Services in support of special events.

Business Operations
Business Operations

This division is responsible for managing OFMR's operations and maintenance budget, collecting and analyzing measurement data, and managing OFMR's human resources programs.


OFMR's Safety unit performs inspections and works with Organizational Development to provide safety training programs to assist staff and ensure a safe working environment.

Operations & Maintenance

OFMR performs day-to-day facilities operations and maintenance tasks to ensure that the facilities are safe and clean for the collections, visitors and staff. These services include custodial, labor and utilities work, recycling, building maintenance and management, systems engineering, and administrative services.

Organizational Development

This unit designs and implements facilities training and best practice initiatives. These programs ensure that OFMR has the capacity for continuous improvement that supports the achievement of organizational goals as well as the development of its employees. The Organizational Development office also manages facility management interns and fellows.
