Kendra L. Gastright
Director, Office of Facilities Management and Reliability
Kendra has more than 16 years of experience managing facilities both at the Smithsonian Institution and in the Navy. In her current role as Director of the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability, Kendra is responsible for operating and maintaining the Smithsonian facilities through a budget of about $100 million and a staff of nearly 900.
Previously Kendra was the Associate Director of the Systems Engineering Division providing centralized maintenance services to all Smithsonian facilities and Building Manager of the National Air and Space Museum. Before coming to the Smithsonian, Kendra was an active duty officer in the U.S. Navy serving as a Public Affairs Officer at Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, Willow Grove, PA from 1993 to 1996 and as a Systems and Database Administrator at the Navy Command Center in Washington, D.C. from 1996 to 1999. Kendra was an engineer in the Navy serving at several facilities, most recently the Naval Air Facility at Andrews Air Force Base and Bancroft Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1999-2004.
Kendra has a Master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from The George Washington University and Bachelor’s degree in Physics (Oceanography) from the U.S. Naval Academy.
Kendra lives on a small farm just outside DC with her husband and 3 kids. They have horses, chickens, a turkey and stray peacock, one gardening goat, cats, dogs, a lizard and turtle. They raise hay, eggs, fruits and vegetables. They don’t eat the animals because the kids have named them all.
