Shannon Riess 2016 FM Intern

Name: Shannon Riess

Project: Emergency management: Emergency operating procedures (EOP’s) and Employee emergency procedures (EEP’s)

School: Florida State University

Major: International Affairs, Interdisciplinary Social Science

My focus of the summer was to aid the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) in order to create a set of emergency operating procedures (EOP’s) for the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). These procedures were created in order to guide each Smithsonian office through a variety of emergencies or disasters at NMNH and to assign responsibility when and if something were to occur.

My project has not been limited to drafting procedures. I have also been suggesting edits for existing policy, presenting my findings, discovering ways to increase coordination and communication between offices, and complete multiple hazard and vulnerability analyses in order to focus on hazards specific to certain offices or buildings.

Although we were all very busy with our work this summer, I am happy to say that the OFMR intern group was able to have an amazing time outside of business hours. We took tours of the facilities and participated in behind the scenes tours at Natural History building and the Museum Support Center.
